The glacial lagoon is an incredible place to see. You are taken out in a small boat and cruise around among icebergs that have broken off of the biggest glacier in Iceland, and in all of Europe, Vatnajökull.

Glacial ice is the most pure ice there is; the water was frozen millions of years ago and has remained unexposed to the sun or air. As they break off, only a tiny portion of the actual iceberg is visible from above the water.

As time goes on and they float in the lagoon, the top of the iceberg gets warmed by the sun which crystallizes it, causing it to be white and opaque. And as they melt, they begin to lift up. When the top loses enough mass, it eventually flips over. You can see in some of these images the stages of turning. The one that is deep blue was one that had turned over just the night before. The deep blue is because it has never been exposed to light or air before.
