It’s so much fun being a geek.

This week, in addition to the Wii, we bought a portable GPS receiver. We’ve been talking about getting it for a while now but we couldn’t really figure a good time to buy it. This week, however, B hit the monumentally old age of 35. This is one of the cooler gizmos we have - it was fun driving home from the restaurant with it telling us exactly where to drive and watching the road as it turned in front of us - especially nice when it’s dark outside to be able to see exactly how the road goes. I was surprised that they had all the streets on base labeled, although it did send us to Anja’s friend’s house down the street instead of our own house. At any rate, it’s going to be so much fun exploring now that we don’t have to worry about spending half of our time out just trying to figure out where we’re going.

And the best part? To test out the system, I included a slip of paper in the box for B’s “real” birthday present (the GPS is not just for him) to take the GPS to Germany and drive from Frankfurt to Munich for Oktoberfest with a specific address as the end location - staying at his uncle’s house. Walter Bean, this rivals your position as Chief of Master Plans! I managed to successfully pull off this surprise without him having the slightest suspicion of ANYTHING, from making the flights to the car rental to contacting his mom in Iceland so she could contact his uncle in Germany to see if he’d be able to stay there - all hotels are booked for the longest time before Oktoberfest even starts.

I’m finally converting B to the Church of Geek!

Tell B I said hes a lucky bastard. Oh, and happy birthday. Also, rent BEERFEST. Great movie if you like beer. It has some great ideas for fun while you’re there. :-D :-D

  6. Dan

Dave, you didnt just throw a favourite in there because you were talking Euro-trashy?

    DORK!!!!

  7. Dad

Dave…you can’t just rent a Porche and go for a spin on the Autobahn…you must complete training and actually know how to react when seeing a car in the rearview going 180kph faster than you. It would be kind of fun being a passenger, though. Has Bj ever driven on it?
Now THAT’S scary! Have fun, birthday boy!

Dad, I saw a special on some high def show, and I argued with someone that lived in Germany about having a special license, and they said that is absolutely false. You have to get a permit when you’re under 18.

  9. Dan

That’s not true, dad. It only applies to youngsters obtaining a learners permit. I saw something on a hi-def channel and lost an argument to someone who lived in germany.

You don´t need a training to go on the autobahn.

I will be showing those overpriced pieces of junk how to drive in my Opel Corsa economy rental. Remember, it not the size of the engine that matters, it is how you use it. A very wise woman told me that….

Hey, B. Did you hear that the Foo Foo Fighters are coming out with a new album next week? Maybe, if you are really lucky, K will buy it for you and you can listen to it tooling down the autobahn. Love those Foo Foo Fighters.

  12. Dan

Yeah Dad, I argued with some guy about needing a special license. He lived in Germany….needless to say I was wrong. I thing I watched the same show as you on some high-def channel. Apparently thats only for drivers under 18 or something.

  13. Dad

Bj knows a very wise woman? Was she making excuses for you?
Remember, that saying about “it’s how you use it” was written by a guy with a REALLY SMALL ENGINE.
And yes, I watched a special on cable about the autobahn and they were specific about being trained to drive on it. I doubt they were giving false info. Besides, just think about Dave tooling down the road at 150…

I guess the only way to know for sure is when I try to get on the autobahn and see if they the let me on. Maybe I will have to show the size of the engine to get on… Those wacky germans.

Foo Foo fighters rock don’t they;)
