Day in, day out
One of the things I love about the Navy is our enlisted ratings. We’re different from the other branches of the military because for each job, we have a distinct rating badge (which is sewn on the left arm of our uniform with our rank).
However, there are a lot of rates! And they change every now and then so as soon as you get to know them, you have to re-learn them.
Anyway, I found a quiz online that I thought would be fun to post, particularly to all my former-Navy family that I’m sure will not have seen a lot of these badges!

Dad
Score: 490. Ended active duty: March, 1983.
Personal Assessment: BRILLIANT!
Where the hell is SM??
Karyn
SM is no longer a rate. They merged with QM.
Dan
Score: 380. Ended active duty 10-96
Personal assesment: Dumbass!
I never heard of half of those. I scored 100% on the aviation ones, though.
Engineman-dave
Story of my life, just short!
390. Passing was 400.
If I just sat at a desk and studied a stoopid chart with rates for a living, I would have scored above 490 i’m sure.

I did better than I thought with the aviation rates too.
Krustina
27.95% correct. Active duty, HA!
Personal assessment: Pretty dang good.
sylvia
UGH….I failed. 70% I am so ashamed. Maybe this is why I am still a second.
Karyn
I don’t know any from sitting around studying - the ones I knew were either because it’s somewhat logical when you’ve been around the rating badges enough, or because I’ve worked with people with those ratings (and have a knack for remembering the ones I’ve seen).
I almost unequivocally failed the ratings where the people wear BDUs, because I never see their rating badges. I think the only rating I got right of those was MA.
Dad
I believe that I have a leg-up on most of you, uh, mortals since I spent 7 years on recruiting duty and was exposed to a wide cross-section of rates. I also broke my arm patting myself on the back. OW!
Karyn
Maybe we can get you a chimpanzee arm transplant.
Karyn
B suggests maybe a gorilla arm transplant would be more appropriate.
(My leg is longer than yours, btw - 520 here)
Engineman-dave
I bet dad got the old MS rating wrong. Mess Specialists were replaced with CS, culinary specialists.
More useless info to store away.

Dad
No excuse for active duty not to get 100%.
Particularly you admin types.
Dave is probably right, it’s a little foggy after 24 years.
SM1, USNR-R
Karyn
I don’t know those dumb SO / CM / FT things.
I did, however, know about 90% of the graphics without looking at the multiple choices. So either I knew them off the top of my head or I didn’t know them at all.
Engineman-dave
Beth got about a 25%, which just goes to show …..that you dont have to have a CLUE about naval insignias and you can still figure some out.
Laura
With never seeing any of these actually in action I scored a 36% completely on guesses and process of elimination
