Hussein trial resumes without defense team

Some of you probably don’t know a lick of what I do here.  I work at Detainee Operations - a very interesting office.  One of our offices (I don’t work there but it’s still part of our office) is CCCI, or the Central Criminal Court of Iraq - the court that is taking Saddam to trial.

I wonder a lot about the defense team - who could defend Saddam Hussein?

Defense attorneys often say that they do what they do because it is important to make sure that the prosecutors and the State play by the rules. Think about it: you read in the newspaper a lot about criminals getting off “on a technicality.” Usually, that means that the cops burst in and conducted an illegal seach and seizure, or made an unlawful arrest. Which makes the 4th amendment to the Constitution a “technicality.” Um, not so much for me–it needs to apply to both the good guys and the bad guys just the same. But I know I’m funny that way. But to bring it back to your post, the defense team quitting in a huff BECAUSE the prosecutors/state aren’t playing by the rules seems mysterious to me.

My thoughts on this. Why bother trying him in Iraq anyway. It has been a farce since it’s beginning. The Hague would have been a much better choice for this man.

I am actually surprised he even “allowed” American attorneys on his team in the first place. Also surprised any non-iraqis would be willing to defend him.
